The Samaritan woman had just spoken with Jesus Christ while she was drawing water out of a well. She left her pot at the well, and then ran to tell the men in the city, “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?” So the men left the city, and were coming toward Him. When Jesus saw them He said to His disciples “… look on the fields, that they are white for harvest…” This story is in John chapter four, which I had studied with the girls in my AIA Bible study Monday night.
I asked two of the girls from my study, Kristine and Monica, to come along with me to speak to the Xavier Women’s Basketball team at their practice the next day. Mark also came and brought one of his students named David. Our students shared with the basketball players about how fun it is being involved in AIA, and the growth and encouragement they receive in their walks with Christ.
As a part of this presentation we asked the girls to fill out a short comment card to indicate their level of interest and give us their phone numbers so we can contact them. We thanked them and the coaches for their time and left practice to go to another room and look at the cards.
We spread the cards out to see their responses. We were amazed at the high level of interest indicated by the basketball players. Then we prayed together, thanking God for His favor that we could speak to the team. When I opened my eyes I looked at the white cards and then thought of this verse above. I told Kristine and Monica, “These white cards remind me of the people from the Samaritan woman’s city; the fields are White for Harvest. These girls want to hear about Jesus and see for themselves”.
We praise God for His work in changing the lives of these student athletes.
